In this course we will read selections from Plato’s Symposium—a series
of philosophical speeches about love—in Greek. The course is appropriate
for anyone who has taken at least a year’s worth of Greek (including
the Graecum). We will decide together which selections to translate, but
will certainly read Aristophanes’ myth (which describes love as
searching for your other half) and Socrates’ ladder of love. We will
primarily translate into English, but you are welcome to translate first
into German and then English, and we can discuss appropriate German
translations.
