What is the relation between the material conditions, roughly speaking the historically specific ways to organize production and reproduction, and gender oppression? How can we theorize the relation between capitalism and patriarchy? Is the latter best understood as a separate set of material (or non-material?) relations? Or do we need a unified theoretical framework to analyze it? Can a materialist feminist analysis provide insights into racism, imperialism and colonialism? How do materialist feminist struggles play out today? We will think about these and other questions by looking at the origins and contemporary developments in materialist feminist analysis, involving Marxist Feminism, Black Feminist Thought, Materialist Queer Theory, Social Reproduction Theory and Postcolonial Feminism.
