Filipino is the national language of the Philippines that is primarily based on Tagalog, one of the major languages widely spoken throughout the Philippines, especially in the National Capital Region, Central, and Southern Luzon. This introductory course is specifically designed for non-Filipino speakers who want to learn the Filipino language as a tool for communication and research. The course emphasizes the sounds in the Filipino language, including intonation and stress, vocabulary, simple grammatical structures, and conversational Filipino, at the same time learning cultures of the Philippines. Different social situations that involve turn-taking skills, courtesies, and initiating and ending a communication exchange will also be learned in class. The students are expected to learn and practice basic conversation in Filipino at the end of the course.
