Malaysia und Indonesien gelten als sogenannte „Transformationsstaaten“, in denen sich politisch-systemische Veränderungen größeren Ausmaßes vollzogen haben bzw. vollziehen. Die Demokratisierung Indonesiens nach dem Sturz des Suharto-Regimes gilt mittlerweile als abgeschlossen, aber die gesellschaftlichen Dynamiken sorgen auch heute für viel Bewegung in den politischen Strukturen. Malaysias Transformationsgeschichte gestaltet sich anders als die Indonesiens, zeigt sich aber seit 2018 ebenfalls als sehr dynamisch. Das Seminar versucht, diese Entwicklungen einzuordnen und sie mithilfe der Instrumente aus Politikwissenschaft und Soziologie (z.B. Transformationsforschung; Soziale Bewegungsforschung) zu analysieren.
Malaysia and Indonesia are considered as “transformation states”, meaning that major political-systemic change has taken place or is currently taking place in these two nation-states. Indonesia’s democratization after the fall of the Suharto regime is generally rated as finished and accomplished, but the accompanying social dynamics are still causing a lot of motion in the country’s political structure. Malaysia’s trajectory is somewhat different from Indonesia’s, but since 2018, Malaysia’s transformation is very dynamic, too. The seminar seeks to sort these developments and to analyse them with the help of approaches from Political Science and Sociology (e.g. transition theories or social movement theories).
