  • What is Moodle?

Moodle provides a platform for students and teachers to exchange course materials and collaborate online. The system offers various tools for learning activities: communication, online tests, wikis etc. Teachers and students can organise themselves in online courses which require a user name and a password to log in to a specific course. The password protection allows students and teachers to interact in the atmosphere of a virtual classroom. There are both online platforms for regular classes and workgroups of all kind in our HU-Moodle.

  • Access to Moodle

For login access, Moodle requires a valid account (username and password):

    • This is either the personal HU-account...
All members of Humboldt-Universität get it at their admission (all enrolled students as well as members of faculty and staff).
    • Or an external account…
There is also the possibility to log in as an external, which is specifically for non-HU-members. The Moodle specific account for external users is valid for use within Moodle only. It does not cover any other IT services of HU.

    See more details below!

  • First way to login: HU-account (students and staff)

Students and other members of Humboldt-Universität log in with a personal HU-account. If you already received your personal HU-account (username consists of 8 letters), you can use this very same account to log in to Moodle!

  • Second way to Log-in: Register for a Moodle specific account (externals)

If you are invited to participate in a Moodle course but you are neither a registered student nor a member of Humboldt-Universität, please feel free to register:

Registration for Moodle specific external account!

There are no specific requirements other than a formal online registration based on your mail address. This account gives you  unlimited access to all areas within Moodle. The account does not provide access to any other services of the HU.

Your full mail address will be your username, and a preliminary password will be sent to this address. Please make sure that the e-mail is correct and valid. Please contact the Moodle support team if you are facing problems!

  • Log-in with username and password for the first time

When you register, you have to accept the regulations of Humboldt-Universität for the protection of privacy as well as some general rules for network and computer security.
Please tick both boxes on the second page.

  • Access to Moodle courses: enrolment key

As well as the Moodle platform as such, also the Moodle courses in most cases will ask for a keyword in order to give access to a specific course. To log in to a course, a "course enrolment key" (german "EinschreibeschlĂźssel") is required. The course enrolment key is set by the course tutor or instructor and is handed over to each of their students for use with a specific Moodle course. You may receive the course enrolment key in the classroom or via e-mail, directly by your tutor or professor.

  • Onlookers welcome: Anonymous guest login (third way to login)

You will find that almost all courses and online learning materials which are currently provided at HU-Moodle are locked up, which is mostly because of sadly restrictive copyright law. Most courses are therefore only open for registered users who log in with a proper username and password. Only very few courses allow anonymous guest login with or without an enrolment key.

Being as it is, the way of anonymous login is not used often in practice. But nevertheless, this login way should be mentioned, if only for the sake of completeness and as an inspiration for the idea of open access.

  • Problems and special cases

Switch from external Moodle-Account to HU-Account and vice versa

If you are enroled as a student or as an employee, but you still have not received your personal HU-account information, you can start right away with an external Moodle registration. Moodle-support will be able to change the login to your Moodle identity later to HU-account, just let Moodle-support know.

When leaving HU, Moodle-support can also switch you from HU-account to an external Moolde-account for future co-operation.
