This course aims to improve students’ speaking, reading and listening skills in their fields of study. Participants will be expected to give presentations on contemporary economic and political events of their choice and participate in follow-up discussions. Topics covered have included Netflix, the Russia-Ukraine war, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, Shein and ultra-fast fashion, Elon Musk (his Twitter takeover, SpaceX, and the Neuralink brain chip), plus future technologies such as electric vehicles, drones, AI, and 3D-printed homes. Previous knowledge of economic and business terminology or concepts is helpful but not a prerequisite. Students will be assessed on the basis of their presentation, active participation, and passing of the final tests in (1) speaking (using the student’s presentation subject and one class topic), (2) reading comprehension, and (3) listening comprehension.
