The artist’s studio is a topos shrouded in mysticism. A cipher for the artistic process that it shields and conceals or stages and mediates, the studio has been the subject of numerous artworks, exhibitions, and debates and features prominently in the promotional materials of artists, galleries, and curators. As a stand-in for particular modes of working it has been embraced and rejected for programmatic reasons, while it remains an object of ongoing fascination. We will undertake four daylong excursions visiting artists in their studios in Berlin in order to learn about their respective artistic practices on site. During these field trips we will encounter a broad spectrum of forms of art making and corresponding spatial configurations. Based on our empirical findings and informed by introductory readings we will inquire into the connections between practical, logistical, economic, socioeconomic, formal, and conceptual aspects of artistic production.
This course will be held in English. Requirements include preparatory readings, a short presentation, and a brief report.
