From the 18th century to the present day, the cotton industry has been a stronghold of globalisation. The organisation of work, resources, locations, consumption and technology have all given rise to transregional intertwinements. The first part of this seminar will focus on the cultural transfers that enabled the cotton industry to spread from "Manchester" to continental Europe, North America, India, Japan, etc. The second part focuses on the culture-led regeneration of former cotton industry centres after deindustrialisation. This development as well is characterised by cultural transfers. The seminar is based on the one hand on joint reading and on the other hand on students' own contributions to self-selected case studies.
Seit dem 18. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart ist die Baumwollindustrie eine Hochburg der Globalisierung. Sowohl die Arbeitsorganisation, die Rohstoffe, die Standorte, der Konsum als auch die Technologie haben transregionale Verflechtungen hervorgebracht. Dieses Seminar fokussiert in einem ersten Teil auf die kulturellen Transfers die die Verbreitung der Baumwollindustrie von „Manchester“ nach kontinental Europa, Nord-Amerika, India, Japan usw. ermöglicht haben. Im zweiten Teil steht die kulturelle Wiedererfindung von ehemaligen Baumwollindustriezentren nach der Deindustrialisierung zentral. Auch diese Entwicklung ist von kulturellen Transfers geprägt. Das Seminar stützt einerseits auf gemeinsamer Lektüre, andererseits auf eigenen Beiträgen der Studierenden zu selbstgewählten Fallbeispielen.
