The South-African Apartheid regime bridged the period from late colonial
Africa until the post-Cold War world. Accordingly, the struggle against
Apartheid reflected the pivotal moments of this period, not only in the
South-African context, but also in wider African, global,
transatlantic, international and Global South contexts. Violence and the
fight against it were at the heart of this struggle and mobilized
solidarity, activism, ideas and inspiration across the country, the
continent and the world. African-American and Indian connections, bonds
in Southern and Eastern Africa, movements in Eastern and Western Europe,
measures by international organizations both supported and were
instigated by South-African anti-Apartheid activism. Shifting scales,
connecting spaces and contextualizing global moments are at the heart of
this seminar and will allow us to grasp transregional entanglements and
historical dynamics. Students are expected to participate in
discussions based on a reading list and to investigate one instance in
depth, leading to a presentation and an essay.
Das südafrikanische Apartheidregime überbrückte den Zeitraum vom
spätkolonialen Afrika bis zur Welt nach dem Kalten Krieg.
Dementsprechend spiegelte der Kampf gegen die Apartheid die
Schlüsselmomente dieser Periode wider, nicht nur im südafrikanischen
Kontext, sondern auch im breiteren afrikanischen, globalen,
transatlantischen und internationalen. Gewalt und der Kampf dagegen
standen im Mittelpunkt dieses Kampfes und mobilisierten Solidarität,
Aktivismus, Ideen und Inspiration im Land, auf dem Kontinent und in der
Welt. Afroamerikanische und indische Verbindungen, Beziehungen im
südlichen und östlichen Afrika, Bewegungen in Ost- und Westeuropa,
Maßnahmen internationaler Organisationen unterstützten den
südafrikanischen Anti-Apartheid-Aktivismus und wurden von ihm initiiert.
Die Verschiebung der Ebene, die Verbindung von Räumen und die
Kontextualisierung globaler Momente stehen im Mittelpunkt dieses
Seminars und ermöglichen es uns, transregionale Verflechtungen und
historische Dynamiken zu erfassen. Von den Studierenden wird erwartet,
dass sie an Diskussionen auf der Grundlage einer Leseliste teilnehmen
und einen Fall eingehend untersuchen, was zu einer Präsentation und
einem Essay führt.
