Language: English

All you want to know about solar cells and a comprehensive overview of their characterization, mainly by electron microscopy and related techniques.

The course will be held hybrid-style. This is, in-person lectures will be given on Fridays from 9-11 a.m. at HU Berlin, NEW 14 1'10

All lectures will be recorded and made available here on Moodle, together with the lecture slides.

Exercises have to be completed as a means to repeat the most important contents of the lectures.

Depending on the total number of participants, the exam will be organized as oral exam or as an online test (multiple choice).

Specific contents: Basics of semiconductor physics, generation and recombination of charge carriers, diffusion and drift currents, p-n junctions, tandem devices, current-voltage characteristics, detailed balance / Shockley-Queisser limit, quantum efficiency, electroluminescence, capacitance spectroscopy, basics of device simulations; scanning and transmission electron microscopy methods with specific application on solar cells: imaging, diffraction, energy-dispersive and wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, electron holography, cathodoluminescence, electron-beam-induced current measurements.
