Kurseinschreibung

This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts and methodologies inherent in the anthropology of cultural heritage and museums. In the initial segment of the course, participants will delve into critical inquiries and themes within the anthropology of heritage. This exploration will encompass various ethnographic approaches, addressing processes ranging from heritage value and social and political construction of heritage forms, as well as critical and ethnographically-informed studies on the collection, classification, conservation, and care to curation, participation, decolonization, and display of heritage.

The second part of the course will focus on the intersection between heritage and social as well as environmental justice. Emphasis will be placed on real-world examples of injustice, such as heritage looting, illicit trade in antiquities, extraction, political exploitation of heritage, and cultural appropriation. Additionally, the course will explore emerging justice-oriented practices, including issues related to ethics and consent, participation, recognition, restitution, reparation, and redistribution.
