Current Readings in Popular Music Studies

This course will involve intensive student-driven reading and discussion of current research on popular music. It will be run as a tutorial and an environment for intellectual exchange. The basic premises will be as follows:

1. Each student will choose a theme that is relevant to their emerging research or otherwise of interest to them. The student’s readings throughout the semester will revolve around that theme. Due to the nature of the course, each student must choose a distinct theme.
2. Each week, each student will:
1. Read articles and book chapters corresponding to the theme.
2. Present one article or book chapter from their weekly reading list in class.
3. Read one article or book chapter from a classmate’s weekly reading list.
4. Initiate questions and promote discussion on their classmate’s reading in class.
3. At the end of the semester, students seeking a MAP will turn in an annotated bibliography of articles related to their theme.
