This course invites you on a journey through the artistic heritage of Shia Islam, unveiling a tapestry of creativity that spans centuries. This course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the intersection between art, culture, and Shia Islamic traditions. From the rich historical masterpieces that illuminate the faith's rich history to the vibrant and innovative expressions of contemporary artists, you'll gain deep insights into the intersection of art, culture, theology and spirituality within the Shia Muslim tradition. Every session, we will concentrate on a distinct thematic exploration to delve into the traditions of calligraphy and architectural expressions deeply rooted in faith, to analyze the intricate world of miniature and other paintings, and dissect material production, including carpets, weavings, ceramics, and tilework. The course offers scholarly insights into the role of music, performance, literature, mosaic art, geometric patterns, and other artistic traditions within Shia Islam, shedding light on their cultural and historical significance. We shall investigate the influence of Shia Islam on fashion, graphic design, cinema, and photography. Lastly, we will explore the dynamic realm of contemporary art, where traditional themes meet modern interpretations.
