This course explores the lives and experiences of Arab Americans through literature. By travelling through different contexts historically and engaging with a diverse range of Arab American literary works, this course offers a comprehensive understanding of Arab American literature and culture. Topics will include current issues concerning Arab Americans in the United States; specifically, the never-ending journey in finding a sense of belonging. One of the readings for this course is Conditional Citizens: On Belonging in America by Laila Lalami (2020). The course will offer insight into the struggles, triumphs, and complex, multifaceted identities of Arab Americans. Discussions will also include theoretical perspectives on travelling concepts and migration/diaspora.
