Introduction to Academic Writing and Case Analysis

Learning objectives:

To familiarize the students with the requirements and standards of writing academic papers in preparation for the Master thesis, and to teach the students a case solving method based on the Gutachtenstil (the analytical style of writing and reasoning employed by German legal practitioners).

The students shall:

• Learn how to apply the case solving method to a specific problem;
• Improve their critical thinking in a legal context; and
• Be able to competently select a topic for the Master thesis, to research effectively and to structurev arguments logically.
