Welcome to the Arbitration Module!


Learning objectives:

To introduce the students to the principles of international arbitration, with the primary focus being on commercial arbitration, as well as on domestic arbitration in Germany. This course covers the theory of international arbitration and equips the students with knowledge that will provide a sound basis for practice in this area of law.

The students shall:

  •   Learn about the theory of international arbitration with the primary focus on commercial arbitration;
  •   Understand the historical and international context in which international arbitration operates;
  •   Be able to identify and critically analyze the basic principles of international commercial arbitration and apply them to concrete problems;
  •   Obtain knowledge of international arbitration in the context of other forms of dispute resolution;
  •   Become adept at understanding and interpreting the statutory regime applicable to international arbitration in various jurisdictions;
  •   Become familiar with the different bodies of rules, soft law and statutory regulations relevant for international arbitration; and
  •   Be able to describe the process and procedure of international arbitration and the recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards.


Exam: 120 minutes written exam
