The performance and functionality of contemporary and emerging devices are largely determined by their surfaces and interfaces. This becomes particularly evident when components are miniaturized to nanometer dimensions, where the majority of the device is made up of surfaces/interfaces. The evolution of technology to this point has been facilitated by the development of “Surface Science” over the past half-century. This lecture aims to provide a thorough overview of surface science, focusing on the general characteristics of surfaces from both a structural and (opto)electronic perspective as well as highlighting some of the most frequently experimental techniques used in the field.
