This course aims to help participants become more confident in critical thinking and writing in English in an academic context. We will be discussing the constructions and power relations of language: limitations of language, "correctness," appreciation vs. appropriation, perception and reality, representation of identity, fallacies and illogical representations. In each session, participants will have the opportunity to read, analyze, and write about several different challenging texts. Vocabulary and grammar appropriate to written academic English will be reviewed in class, with plenty of opportunities to apply it in practice. The course aims to advance participants' reading, reasoning, writing, and vocabulary skills. The course attempts to answer the question: how can we truly represent ourselves when we are simultaneously heightened and limited by language?
