The étale cohomology groups of a scheme, introduced by Grothendieck and his school, are algebraic analogues of the usual cohomology groups with finite coefficients of a topological space. This course will discuss étale cohomology and its properties. Next spring we will use étale cohomology to prove the Weil conjectures, following Deligne.
