Reproduction is a key concept in Gender Studies. The modern history of and contemporary debates over reproductive access, health and technologies are shaped by racial capitalism, settler colonialism, and environmental inequalities. This course will introduce students to queer-feminist theories of reproduction beyond abortion debates, with a particular focus on racism and coloniality. Topics covered include reproduction and the state; social reproduction theory; anti-natalist thought; reproductive futurism; and reproductive justice. We will engage with critical race theory, feminist and postcolonial Science & Technology Studies, queer of color theory, and analyze films and artworks. Students will read and discuss foundational and recent works that center Black, Indigenous, and trans* perspectives on reproduction.
