Visualizing the City as / in Ethnography is a course focused around the production, circulation and perception of visual representations of the city in ethnography. From early traditions of ethnographic photography to the more recent multimodal; feminist, decolonial and other artistic / scholarly takes on the city, the course aims to explore the spatial, political, cultural and methodological routes to rethink the mutual production of urban visualization and ethnographic knowledge. Thematically the course is organized around two interrelated modes of inquiry, 1) visual regimes and representations of the city that have existed within ethnography as a field, 2) urban-focussed visualizing practices that have been developed and / or implemented as ethnographic method.
