The module investigates the increasing power of right-wing populism and the rising authoritarianism by focusing on the state apparatuses (physical and symbolic violence) which apply on mainly security state and body politics. It evaluates contributions to modern state theories ranging from Marx to Weber, and from Schmitt to Foucault and Bourdieu including recent contributions such as Clarke, and Bonefeld. With focusing on the subject of the study of politics, the module will have three prominent aims: (i) to develop a recognition of the fundamental figures in modern state theory; (ii) to introduce competing theories of the state; (iii) to operate these theories to understand the current form of state and to examine the rising authoritarianism and transformations inthe east and non-Europe countries, such as Poland, Hungary, and Turkey.
