Case and agreement in syntactic theory

This course will investigate the phenomena of case and agreement from a theoretical and a crosslinguistic perspective.
While agreement tends to signal that two grammatical units share the same properties (e.g. person, number, gender),
case has the function of differentiating two or more noun phrases in a clause, as well as indexing a noun phrase
(i.e. signalling its role in a clause). Yet, the two can interact in various ways, e.g. agreement can only be possible
with nouns phrases of a particular case.
Apart from providing an overview of different morphosyntactic realisations of agreement and case, the course will place a
particular emphasis on their mutual interaction and interdependency.
