In this seminar, we will investigate how multilingualism plays out in digital media (e.g. YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and messenger channels such as Telegram and WhatsApp). The first few weeks will be spent covering basic theoretical issues on multilingual societies and linguistic dynamics in digital media. Some topics that will likely occur are language and identity, code-switching, language ideologies, and minority languages. After the theoretical introduction, students will apply theory to research by carrying out their own mini research projects on a langauge of their choice which will be presented in class. This class will be held synchronously via Zoom.
