In this course, students learn about and apply basic concepts and analytical methods of linguistic field research. The course content not only includes general methods and techniques of collecting, processing and analyzing language data at different grammatical levels, but also specific methods of testing hypotheses through linguistic field tasks, such as elicitation and storyboards. We also learn about and discuss ethical, and language maintenance and preservation issues. Students will try out selected course content by working with speakers of lesser-known/researched languages, towards the goal of contributing to an ongoing project on the urban linguistic diversity of Berlin: https://www.berlin-spricht.org/
**Please note that the course will only start two weeks after the semester start, on November 1st. We will make up the missing two initial classes during the semester.**
