This seminar discusses social theories that explain the onset,
structure, persistence, and dynamics of violence. It assembles a wide
range of theories and studies that deal with violent practices in civil
wars, mass atrocities, and spontaneous mob dynamics. By examining the
forms and dynamics of class from various theoretical angles, the seminar
aims to situate violence within the larger themes of knowledge and
power.
