The course aims to open an inquiry on the themes of indigeneity and Indigenous resistance based upon the political and social structures and processes of Philippine Indigenous peoples in the 21st century. Specifically, we will look at how the concepts of autonomy and self-determination, legal pluralism, indigenous methods in social research and pedagogy, and community organizing and activism have developed in the context of the Philippine Indigenous experience. The course will explore how we can understand these realities beyond the “nationalist” thematics of colonization,  marginalization, and resistance. We will do this via a review of relatively recent (post-70s) concepts, approaches, and theorizings by Filipino scholars and scholars working on the Philippines. While this course will foreground the unique trajectories of Philippine Indigenous studies and engagements, we will also maintain a critical conversation with decolonizing and Indigenous scholarship elsewhere.
