The research seminar on the history of modernization starts with a discussion of current theoretical debates on multiple and alternative modernities. In a next step small research groups around empirical themes with regard to South - and Southeast Asia are set up, who engage in literature research and assessment. A lead idea is that modernization - and development initiatives started within the context of colonial as well as postcolonial states in the region and resulted in the emergence of „hybrid“ or „plural“ social and cultural modernities. An area of possible scrutiny are also the transfers and entanglements implicated in the modernities of the larger region. Due to the pandemic this research seminar will be conducted online, with a combination of zoom-sessions and text readings.
