In an increasingly globalised world intercultural competence is becoming more and more important. This course is designed to improve your ability to deal with intercultural encounters in English. We will examine some of the theory behind intercultural competence, but the majority of the focus will be on the practical issue of how to manage intercultural encounters, what to do and say to avoid any misunderstanding or miscommunication, and what can be done when something does go wrong. We will look at our own cultural beliefs in comparison to others, and focus on the kind of language we need to use in order to maximize our chances of successfully communicating with people outside our own cultural norms.
