The course aims to provide theoretical knowledge by way of introducing students to Vietnamese, which is currently the heritage language of a large number of people in Germany. We will start with a general overview of the basic facts of Vietnamese regarding its history, writing system, sound structure, word structure, and sentence structure (Trinh 2013). Then we will discuss more technical papers on various topics including, but not limited to, predicate fronting (Trinh 2009, 2010), NP-split (Trinh 2016), expletive negation (Trinh 2017), classifiers (Trinh 2011), polar questions (Trinh et. al 2023), biased questions (Trinh 2023), and personal pronouns (Trinh 2022). Basic concepts and principles of syntactic and semantic theory necessary to understand these works will be introduced and explained along the way. The course will be in English, with occasional switch to German when the need arises.
