Inequality and diversity are inherent to urban life, which makes cities laboratories of living together. The “throwntogetherness” (Massey 2005) of urbanites, urban infrastructure and government creates conflict, friction, but oftentimes also solutions and compromise. In this seminar, we will trace repertoires of urban dwellers and communities to co-inhabit cities from South Asia to the Balkans.

You will learn to:

  • Grapple with the complexities of urban cohabitation (Urban Inequality and Cultural Diversity, Urban Infrastructure and Governance, Urban Housing and Public Space)
  • Identify strategies of inhabitants, communities and governments that permit living together in cities
  • Contextualize a case study of a single city in a state and a region
