The summer semester of 2024 marks the 200-year anniversary of G.W.F. Hegel’s celebrated Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion. First delivered in the summer semester of 1821 (and repeated in 1824, 1827, and 1831), these lectures continue to stand as a defining intellectual achievement of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and one of its most cherished minds.

This seminar will survey Hegel’s mature thought on the philosophy of religion as presented in his lectures delivered at the University of Berlin between 1821 and 1831. Topics ranging from the economic Trinity, to mystical theology, to the history and future of religion(s) emerge from these texts with penetrating insight, precision, and clarity. For students of Hegel, these lectures epitomize his ability to contextualize his dialectical philosophy and logic into the language and meaning of theology and religion.
