The short story is a highly flexible, diversified and, we may add, often underrated genre. In this course we will mainly focus on the modern and contemporary short story in Britain, but excursions into the 18th and 19th centuries will be included. Apart from acquainting ourselves with a large spectrum of stories (modernist, post-modernist, colonial, post-colonial, queer, detective, experimental etc.), we will also discuss questions of genre and genre theory.
Reading recommendations will follow in due course.
