This seminar considers the ways in which we interact with physical and virtual (digital) objects—interfaces and instruments—to make music, and the kinds of embodied knowledge that these interactions produce. We will be especially concerned with contemporary, technologically mediated musical styles (electronic dance music, hip hop, game music, and others). Special attention will be given to real-time processes such as performance and play. Important keywords will include concepts such as interface, embodied cognition, affordance, and improvisation. Class visits to sites such as Berlin's synthesizer shops and the Musikinstrumenten-Museum will be a part of the learning process.
