Social mobilization around struggles for environmental justice often triggers institutional transformation. However, the particularities of these processes of change remain under-examined. The primary aim of this research project is to develop a deeper understanding of environmental conflict dynamics, and the factors and conditions that lead to institutional transformation brought about by social-ecological movements in environmental justice struggles. We will study different approaches to environmentalism and environmental justice as discussed in academia and activism, explore the transformative potential of collective action, identify ways that environmental management offers opportunities for building collaborative relations, and reflect on the role of research and the possibilities of generating collective action from academia. For this project, participants will undertake research on the mapping, characterization, and analysis of contemporary environmental conflicts.
