In this course we will read selections from Plato’s Symposium—a series
of philosophical speeches about love—in Greek. The course is appropriate
for anyone who has taken at least a year’s worth of Greek (including
the Graecum). We will start by translating a large portion of Socrates’
speech, and then see how much time is left to translate other parts of
the dialogue. We will primarily translate into English, but you are
welcome to translate first into German and then English, and we can
discuss appropriate German translations.
