This first part of this course will discuss Plato’s Crito, selections from his Republic, and Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics book V. We will then turn to selections from Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Women, Mill’s Utilitarianism, Rawl’s Theory of Justice, and Charles Mills on racial justice. We will aim to understand what these different theories of justice are, why they differ from one another, and why the debates about justice have evolved in the way that they have.
